colorado - utah trip december 2019
Another road trip in the books - this time we headed Southwest to see what Colorado and Utah had to offer. Initially we started the trip by camping, saving money by "ruffing" it with the dogs. But after the first night of sleeping in the teens, we decided we were more of the pampered pup type, and decided to rent AirBnBs along the way. It was super easy to find affordable and dog friendly stays along the way, and we booked our stays same day! We did shorten our trip quite a bit due to this added expense, and promise to visit more of Utah again soon!
Our first major stop was at the Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs. This park was completely dog-friendly (provided they were leashed) and the pups loved their first red rock hike!
This trip was also the first trip that we had a hard itinerary for. We had a scheduled photography visit at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Sanctuary in Divide, early Saturday morning. They do allow dogs to be kept in vehicles during your visit, and we were sure that they wouldn't have any trouble in the sub 20-degree weather. Funnily enough, Athena started multiple wolf howls across the sanctuary, much to our listening pleasure. For anyone wondering, it is very easy to tell a tamaskan from a wolf!
After a few days in Colorado we were off to Utah to explore Zion National Park. Did you know there is a wonderful dog park just outside Zion NP? We highly recommend it to anyone who in that area. As you may know, most National Parks do not allow dogs on trails, and Zion only had one dog friendly trail (Pa'rus Trail). The Marj Bonner Trail at George Barker River Park definitely made it up to the dogs though!
After Zion (where Tom proposed!!) we headed South into Arizona to checkout the Grand Canyon. Along the way we stopped at the Vermillion Cliffs to walk the dogs in some Martian-looking terrain! And we spotted a coyote!
Our last stop was the Grand Canyon - another not so dog friendly park. But we had all thoroughly enjoyed out Southwest adventures and headed on home to tell family and friends about our good news! And of course the dogs approve ;)
